About the Author:
From a review of the book by
Erik Marcus on www.vegan.com/issues/1999:
"...
The author, Suzanne Havala,
is one of the most widely published RD's to specialize in vegetarian
nutrition...Havala offers neither clever turns of phrase nor engaging stories
to hold the reader's attention. Instead, her goal is to deliver a complete
presentation in as few words as possible. The idea is that, if presented
simply and straightforwardly, the basic information on how to follow a
vegetarian diet can be explained in about an hour. Reading this book may be a
little like taking medicine, but it does go down very quickly.
Without wasting a single word, Havala covers all the subjects you need to know
about in order to change your diet. She starts with a basic "Nutrition Talk"
that covers the nutrients a healthy diet must provide. She then offers advice
on breaking the meat habit, and then suggests ways to restock your kitchen.
For people who aren't accustomed to eating vegetarian meals, there's a nice
section on meal-planning for vegetarians. Special advice for different age
groups is also given. For readers who are new to eating vegetarian, there's
guidance for eating at home and on the road.
To cover so much ground in so few words is a real achievement, and Being
Vegetarian is a book I highly recommend. "
